Best Eco Nappy Brand | Junior Design Awards 2023

Eco nappies are the way forward and these brands are pushing ahead for a more sustainable family life...

Who:Bambino Mio

What:Bambino Mio - Revolutionary Reusable nappies

Why:

Our judges were surprised and excited to learn that Bambino Mio have been making reusable nappies for over 25 years! The panel felt that this pioneering eco-nappy brand who put so much love into creating sustainable nappies that are kind to babies and our planet, were doing a fantastic job in terms of innovation and education. Their unique one-nappy-fits-all all model that lasts from birth to potty training is a great way of ensuring that nappies have an even longer lifecycle while keeping parents’ nappy spend down.

The attention to detail in the construction of these nappies also impressed. The absorbent core, double elasticated legs, shaped waist, and an inner pocket to prevent leaks were all admired as were the cool graphic patterns on the outer shells. A special mention also has to be given to the brilliant poo puns and funny slogans on their packaging which made us laugh out loud.

This is a nappy brand with personality that really makes you feel like you’re joining a great club. Which you are! Plus, Happy 25 years to you and us!!!

Cleverly engineered nappies that are convenient, comfortable and ensure excellent containment. I love the fun, graphic prints.

I love the sense of humour, bright graphics and clever attention to detail in this brand which has a real do-good, feel-good vibe. No more plastic nappies clogging landfill and rivers!

Who:Kit & Kin

What:Eco-friendly Disposable Nappies

Why:

The level of commitment to keeping their production as ethical and carbon neutral as possible combined with their active work to help protect the planet really impressed our judges who felt that Kit & Kin embodied the values that other disposable nappy brands should sit up and take notice of.

Every pack of their nappies sold supports the purchase of threatened rainforest through the World Land Trust and every nappy subscription saves 5 rainforest trees, which can then create 7600 tonnes of water and protect 13 tonnes of carbon. Kit and Kin also fund educational scholarships for children who live in these rural, rain forest adjacent areas.

If that wasn’t enough, our judges felt that these nappies were super comfortable, soft to the touch, highly absorbent and kind to baby’s bottoms with a wonderfully cute outer shell.

Kit &Kin are proof that bigger brands can make a positive difference with their choices and so can we.

Bonita Turner, Editor of Junior

An incredibly conscious take on disposable nappies. Responsibly sourced plant-based materials, a reassuringly long ‘free-from’ list and carbon-neutral production. Love the adorable animal face bottoms, too.

Charlotte Jolly, Beauty Director of Hello! and Hello! Fashion @mscharliejolly

When you see the chemicals and plastic that go into regular disposable nappies, switching to a well-designed, eco-friendly version like Kit & Kin is a no-brainer. Price is definitely a factor but if you can afford it, please consider it!

Who:Nipper Nappies

What:The Bloomin Gorgeous Collection

Why:

Oh yes! This was the general response to the fabulously retro prints on Nipper Nappies’ aptly named Bloomin Gorgeous collection. Featuring designs “reminiscent of your grandparents kitchen wallpaper from the 70’s ” these prints are full of joy and made all our judges smile.

Of course, the fabulous outer shell is only half the story and these nappies were also praised for their clever double gusset designed to prevent leaks, their super soft polar fleece linings and layer boosters that come as standard.

Just gorgeous! I absolutely love these retro prints that will brighten up any bottom!

Bonita Turner, Editor of Junior

The retro prints might hark back to the days of folded cloth nappies but Nipper Nappies are so simple and convenient to use with their absorbent inserts and strategically placed poppers. Super soft, functional and reliable - just seems a shame not to have them on show more often.

A great brand that makes brilliant nappies with prints that are cool, fun and uplifting.

Who:Pim Pam

What:Reusable Pocket Nappies

Why:

Everyone particularly liked the design of these nappies and felt they would really pull in parents with an eye for cool design. The gorgeous muted shades, cute pared-back graphics and clever design collaborations with like-minded eco-friendly brands Organic Zoo and Fill, really impressed.

As well as being cute and stylish, the nappies were praised for their simple, easy-to-use functionality and comfort. Multiple snap fastenings for a bespoke fit and a double gusset to stop leaks scored highly.

Gosh this has been a tough category this year! With their clever adjustable fit and truly gorgeous prints, Pim Pam are a huge favourite of mine.

Bonita Turner, Editor of Junior

Beautiful colours and patterns and a comfortable, customisable fit that will keep pace with your growing baby and toddler. Pim Pam also manages to minimise the amount of washing and sorting that comes with reusable nappies.

Charlotte Jolly, Beauty Director of Hello! and Hello! Fashion @mscharliejolly

Definitely my favourite nappies to look at! I would buy these prints to hang on my wall! I also like the fact that you can buy plain, single-colour nappies if you want to. The fit on these nappies also feels great

Who:Splash About

What:Splash About Happy Nappy Baby Swim Collection

Why:

The JDA panel was super impressed to hear that Splash About had risen to the challenge to create a double-layer swim nappy that doesn’t require a disposable nappy to be worn underneath, in line with new baby swim school rules. This means less landfill and less soggy bottoms all round!

Our judges felt that this brand made reassuringly high-quality and children-friendly swimming clothes and accessories, featuring cute designs that kids will love.

This swimwear is fantastic and the fact that little ones can use them without wearing a disposable underneath means less landfill and much more freedom of movement and confidence in the water.

Bonita Turner, Editor of Junior

These feel like such great quality. Perfect for handing down through the family and then onto friends.

Eleonore Crompton, Deputy Editor, Junior

These are a great investment, especially when you commit to weekly swimming lessons. There are plenty of patterns to choose from and the fit is nice and snuggly without chafing those chubby thighs.
