10 Reasons to stay at The Esplanade Hotel, Newquay

1. Location, Location, Location

Location is undoubtedly one of The Esplanade’s biggest selling points. Sitting on Esplanade Road in Newquay, on Cornwall’s north coast, the hotel overlooks Fistral Beach, one of the UK’s best-known surfing spots. It’s around five minutes by car from Newquay railway station, with taxis available for the short onward journey and around five miles from Cornwall Airport Newquay.

2. Relaxed Luxury

What we particularly liked about The Esplanade was its relaxed, casual feel. It’s welcoming and comfortable rather than stuffy, making it an easy choice for families who want a little comfort without worrying about the children being children. The atmosphere feels genuinely family-friendly, with facilities that encourage everyone to enjoy themselves at their own pace. It’s the sort of place where sandy toes, post-swim hair and a busy day of adventures all feel perfectly at home.

3. An indoor swimming pool for all-weather fun

A swimming pool is always a winner on a family break, especially in Cornwall, where the weather can change in an instant. The Esplanade’s heated indoor swimming pool, complete with a shallow splash area for younger children, provides a welcome alternative to the beach.

4. Plenty to keep children entertained

The family facilities extend well beyond the pool. There’s an indoor soft play area beside Cove Restaurant, a vast games room, a pirate ship adventure playground overlooking Fistral Beach and an in-house cinema showing family favourites throughout the day. The hotel also runs a full programme of entertainment during school holidays, with activities ranging from silent discos to caricaturists, alongside complimentary weekend fun outside term time. With plenty to keep different ages entertained, it’s a particularly good option for families who like a little variety built into their stay, whatever the Cornish weather has in store.

5. A teddy bear to take home

A lovely extra for younger guests is the build-my-bear experience, with each child receiving a teddy to make and take home when booking directly on eligible rates. It’s a fun holiday keepsake and a thoughtful touch that adds to the family-friendly feel. (This offer is subject to booking conditions, so check the details when reserving.)

6. Thoughtful little extras

It’s often the little details that make a hotel stay, and we appreciated the thought that had gone into the bathroom amenities at The Esplanade. Children have full-sized Good Bubble toiletries to use during their stay, while the grown-ups are treated to GAIA Skincare products. It’s a nice touch that feels a little more considered than the usual hotel miniatures, and one less thing to squeeze into an already overflowing family washbag.

7. Surfing lessons right on site

You can’t stay overlooking Fistral Beach without being tempted to try surfing. The Esplanade is home to Quiksilver Surf School, making it wonderfully convenient for families keen to get out on the waves. It’s a brilliant opportunity for older children and teenagers to learn a new skill, while parents can join in or enjoy watching from the shore. Professional lessons cater for different abilities, from complete beginners to more experienced surfers, so there’s an opportunity to give it a go whatever your level. Even for those who prefer to keep their feet firmly on the sand, the beach’s lively surfing scene is part of what makes Newquay such an appealing family destination.

8. Relaxed dining at Cove Restaurant

We ate at Cove Restaurant during our stay and liked its relaxed, casual approach to dining. With views towards Fistral Beach, it’s a welcoming spot for family meals without the formality. Afternoon tea is also available, served in the sea-facing lounge, which makes the most of the coastal setting.

For the grown-ups, Elements Cocktail Bar offers a more intimate atmosphere after dark, with a selection of cocktails in an adults-only setting. The combination of relaxed family dining, a comfortable lounge and a separate space for evening drinks gives the hotel a little more versatility, catering for different ages and occasions without losing its laid-back feel.

9. Spa time for the grown-ups

Family holidays should be enjoyable for parents, too. While The Esplanade has its own sauna and hot tub, those looking for a more indulgent spa experience can head across the road to its sister property, Fistral Beach Hotel and Spa.

GOOD TO KNOW: Spa access isn’t included in an Esplanade stay and must be booked separately in advance. Guests receive 10% off spa treatments at the adults-only sister hotel across the road, Fistral Beach Hotel and Spa. The spa is for over-18s only.

10. Dogs Welcome

Family holidays often mean bringing four-legged family members along, too. The Esplanade offers selected dog-friendly rooms, making it a useful option for those who prefer not to leave their canine companions at home. Not every room type accepts dogs, and charges and conditions apply, so it’s worth checking the details when booking.

GOOD TO KNOW: Dogs receive a dog bed and bowl in the room.

The Junior Verdict

The Esplanade Hotel is a lovely choice for families looking for a relaxed, comfortable seaside break in Cornwall. We loved its casual atmosphere, impressive range of facilities and the thoughtful touches that make younger guests feel welcome. The indoor swimming pool, games room and cinema provide plenty of entertainment whatever the weather, while Cove Restaurant offers a relaxed place to dine together.

The location is, of course, the major draw, with Fistral Beach just moments away. This isn’t about formal, ultra-polished luxury; it’s about thoughtful facilities, a welcoming atmosphere and the freedom to enjoy a seaside holiday at your own pace. For families looking for a relaxed, family-friendly hotel in Newquay, with plenty to keep children entertained and the coast on the doorstep, The Esplanade makes a lovely choice. Sounds pretty good to us!
