Best Eco Product Design for Babies | Junior Design Awards 2023

These eco products for babies are not only better for the environment they make family life a little easier too...

Who:DockATot

What:DockATot Kind Bassinet

Why:

This sweet printed bassinet made entirely from responsibly sourced, corrugated cardboard and a renewably sourced fibre mattress really intrigued our judges who loved the pared back, eco-friendly approach to design with a stylish twist.

With the ethos, “Kind to Baby, Mother and Earth” the judges agreed that the Kind Bassinet was the perfect embodiment of planet-friendly baby equipment.

Love this super eco-friendly bassinet option and the fact that it's wipeable means it is as practical as it is cute!

Excellent design concept...love the flatpack solution taking up minimal storage space when not in use and that it’s so lightweight and easy to carry around the home. Love the iconic William Morris prints - everything in the home should look good as well as being functional and useful and this ticks all the right boxes. Impressive eco credentials. A safe sleeping solution for baby with minimal waste which is brilliant for a product that is used for such a relatively short time.

Love these cots that are so low-impact on the planet but high-impact when it comes to style. I can imagine this being a great gift filled with baby essentials for a baby shower.

Who:Oli&Carol

What:Oli&Carol Cherry seed-filled rattles

Why:

Our judges were very excited to see Oli&Carol, the brand known for their fantastic teethers, branching into baby rattles.

Their first-ever collection of rattle toys went down extremely well with the JDA panel who loved the range of vibrant, cleverly hewn veggie shapes made of 100% natural rubber and filled with up-cycled cherry seeds that effectively turn a teether into a rattle, giving babies a two in one toy.

Love the sound of these rattles, which are actually quite soothing! No wonder they have been proven to calm babies down. The cool Oli&Carol design and eco-materials make these such a great gift idea.

Nice colours to keep baby's attention and I like the dual function of rattle and teether. Great use of waste product with the seed filling.

Laura Normanton, Interiors Editor, @lauramnormanton

Bringing friendly vegetables into babies' lives from early on. The positive association must have an impact! That these rattles are made from all-natural materials will be very reassuring to parents.

Who:MAM

What:MAM Original Pure Soother

Why:

Made from bio-renewable and carbon neutral materials, these soothers are much kinder to the environment than their regular counterparts, while losing none of the quality and attention to detail you’d expect from MAM.

Our judges couldn’t have welcomed this move into eco-friendly territory more and felt that these well-designed soothers with their handy self-sterilising travel boxes that also reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 77% were fantastic.

Such an easy switch to make for a more eco-conscious approach to parenting. Great soothers designed with happy babies and the planet at heart.

Bonita Turner Editor of Junior

It feels like high time that the ubiquitous dummy/pacifier/soother should be given an eco update. Like toothbrushes, the number that end up in land-fill must be huge. Such a brilliant idea that I hope inspires other big brands to follow suit.
