Artist Residence Cornwall
A unique and gorgeous boutique hotel in Penzance the Artist Residence Cornwall will seduce you from the moment you step inside this revitalised Georgian seaside inn. Located in the oldest part of this Cornish seaside town on the eccentric and dreamy lanes of Chapel Street. Artist Residence Cornwall has 22 unique bedrooms and a spacious 3-bedroom cottage as well as the inviting family-friendly restaurant ‘The Cornish Barn’, cosy bar, terrace garden and outside games area. (No need for a pool at this residence either as it’s stone throw from the outdoor newly refurbished Art Deco Jubilee Pool). The laid-back west country vibe seeps throughout the hotel with welcoming staff, squishy places to relax and casual, homely surroundings for younger guests and dogs.
We stayed in The Lookout – often sited as ‘the best room in the house’. This luxe family-sized room is beautifully decorated with the signature Artist Residence deco of reclaimed furniture and fittings (when can we move in?) – and a bumper stocked mini bar filled with local Cornish goodies.
The bathtub and sink are stocked with full size bottles of Organic Bramley toiletries for you to use throughout your stay – and are safe for younger skin too. Inspired by the British countryside Bramley is spotted at many chic UK hotels – and are Junior Design Award winners to boot!
The open plan loft style room of The Lookout has a cosy living space which is ideal for younger guests to play and sleep – although you will probably all pile into the super king-sized bed. That’ of course s if you can tear yourself away form the spa-like bathroom with a copper standing bath tub and rainfall shower! Cosy features include a log burner, a Roberts Radio, flat screen TV’s, a rustic kitchenette and small dining area – ideal for snack time or for preparing refreshments to take on the small rooftop balcony which is perfectly perched above the rooftops of Penzance with sea views towards Newlyn and Mousehole. The Family Room is another must-stay as ideal for upto 5 guests and the Bigger Double has a sofa bed and is also dog-friendly.
Family Time
As you would except of a Georgian manor house the ‘higgledy-piggledy’ rooms lend themselves to lots of snug corners and areas to eat, relax and play one of the many board games piled up. The inside bar is intimate with a log burner and sofas while the outside garden is a neat sun trap for those glorious Cornish summers. With an outside bar, family friendly hammocks, an outside games table it a great spot for a bite to eat or drink before you venture to one of the many tourist attractions within easy reach of the hotel.
The Food
Don’t miss a visit to the downstairs The Cornish Barn smokehouse. Serving up freshly cooked local meat and fish – and a great kids menu – in an intimate and relaxed setting that doesn’t make you wince if children are a little less than poised.
This rustic diner is more a community hub where relaxing over long lunches after your stroll around the cobbled streets of Penzance, reading the papers over frothy coffees with a hearty brunch or sipping house cocktails with a dinner that will ensure you need a evening stroll to combat the over indulgence (you won’t be able to resist the Smoked Beer Can Chicken, Barn Burgers and local cheeses) – this is one hotel eatery that is worthy of a visit even if you aren’t staying the night.
GOOD TO KNOW: It’s worth noting is breakfast is until 2.30pm so you can check out of your room at the very last minute and then head to eat. Ideal for families who need those obligatory five more minutes to sort, pack and double check.
