Best Fashion Newcomer | Junior Design Awards 2024

These award winning new brands have all scooped an accolade in this years JDA - these are the brands to watch!

Winner:GOLD Best Fashion Newcomer

Who:Talou

What:High quality kids Knitwear

Why:

Talou made a bold entrance this year with their collection of vibrant, creative knitwear made from dead-stock yarns. Our judges especially loved the trade-in initiative, where you can sell back old pieces for a bigger size as your child grows and the knitwear they’ve loved can be passed on to the next little adventurer and continue its journey. Earth-inspired tones meet extraordinary quality here, the panel were impressed by the thoughtful details like the boxy fit and fold back cuffs, both of which help extend the wearability of the jumpers.

Beautiful, quality knitwear. I love the circular element to this brand, such a fab idea.

Bonita Turner, Editor of Junior, @juniormagazineonline

Absolutely love that the bubbas can grow with pieces and they become a wardrobe staple.

Portia Freeman, model, broadcaster and mixologist, @portiaportiaaaa

Love the cut and stick designs - so funky and fun. Using deadstock yarn to encourage waste reduction is not only good for the planet but good for the brand, with smaller, unique collections and colours.

Who:Just Peachy Basics

What:Feel Good Underwear

Why:

Every great outfit has to start somewhere, and these basics are anything but basic! Our judges loved the gender-neutral, year-round wearability of these pieces. The material was butter-soft and the JDA panel was excited to learn that Just Peachy use Oeko-Tex certified fabric endorsed by medical professionals which is perfect for soothing little ones with eczema and delicate skin as well as being biodegradable and free from any nasty chemicals. And the fun part? The DIY iron-on patches! With this ultimate personal touch, kids can make every piece their own.

An exciting and creative new addition to the children’s fashion world, what better place to start an outfit than with the comfiest underwear with your favourite Pokemon on?

Bonita Turner, Editor of Junior, @juniormagazineonline

Children’s underwear is the forgotten friend when it comes to kids' clothing. As a mother of a little girl who is very particular about what knickers she wears and is devastated whenever her unicorn knickers are in the wash. I am so glad that this particular item is getting the attention it deserves! My four-year-old would love to design her own knickers. Children get so excited about what characters are on their underwear. It’s a funny little eccentricity that all children have! I’m glad it’s finally being recognised!

Sarah-Jane Mee, Sky News Broadcaster, @skysarahjane

Such a great way to go from nappies to underwear, the stickers make them so unique to the little one wearing them.

Winner:JOINT SILVER Best Fashion Newcomer

Who:Wide Awake Club

What:Handmade Denim Dungarees

Why:

A fab pair of dungarees are a hero in any wardrobe, big or small, and the JDA judges loved that Wide Awake Club’s pairs are both handmade and unisex. Our panel commented on the thoughtfulness of the designs – a baggier fit offers lots of growing room as well as the adjustable straps, and we love the idea of clothes made to match kids’ personalities rather than their gender. The Santa print and the sunflowers were the biggest hits!

Who says trains are just for boys and pink is just for girls? Love the freedom, fun and creativity of this brand, beautiful dungarees!

Bonita Turner, Editor of Junior, @juniormagazineonline

A fantastic unisex brand that is bold, creative and bursting with personality. Encouraging children to stand out from the crowd and bring the fun! Love the santa dungarees!

Sarah-Jane Mee, Sky News Broadcaster, @skysarahjane

OBSESSED WITH THESE DUNGAS!!! Absolutely head over heels with the sunflower design.

Portia Freeman, model, broadcaster and mixologist, @portiaportiaaaa

Love, love, love! Wish I had a little one to put in those Santa dungarees!

Winner:JOINT BRONZE Best Fashion Newcomer

Who:The Little Light Bulb Company

What:Montessori-Inspired Interactive Tees

Why:

The Little Light Bulb Company are on a mission to provide the perfect antidote to screen time with their genius Montessori-inspired T-shirts. The tops are designed for children to interact with, rather than to appeal to onlookers, and a QR code on the back of the T-shirts gives access to a list of games and activities that busy parents can turn to, no preparation needed. Our panel loved that the T-shirts are unisex and promote the importance of connecting with our children, and were impressed by the thoughtful design, with all images below mid-point to avoid neck strain.

Such an innovative idea, a unique addition to kids wardrobes that they’ll love.

Bonita Turner, Editor of Junior @juniormagazineonline

I love the owners obvious passion for her idea and mission to connect parents to their children, and to avoid screentime. I also have a huge appreciation for the Montessori method and am constantly looking for ideas to entertain but also help educate, especially for my 3-year-old. I think these T-shirts are great.

Charlotte Kewley, founder of The Little Stylist, @thelittlestylist

The QR code and interactive games give this simple tee a lot more uumph!

Jennifer Cattaui, founder of Babesta, New York, @babesta

We are so used to seeing words on children’s clothes that are aimed at those looking at them rather than for the children themselves. This is a really simple but really creative idea for learning fun and interaction.
