Stapelstein – which literally means ‘stacking stones’ in German – is the perfect choice of name for this brand new toy-come -apparatus for kids.
These wonderfully tactile, over-size and super light-weight pebbles, which can be bought in bundles or individually, were conceived by educators, creators and partners Stephan Schenk and Hannah König who, having observed an increasing lack of movement in many kids of today, decided to create a toy that would help engage bodies and minds, without requiring huge amounts of space.
Lightweight and fully recyclable, they can be used indoors, outdoors and even in water. The toys also encourage role-play and imaginative play, inspiring kids to pick them up and turn them into everything from stepping stones in an imaginary stream to steering wheels, hats and bowls. The fact that they are so very light, means that they are perfect for very young children to play with, being easy to carry with no sharp edges. Amazingly, one Stapelstein weighs just 180 grams, but can hold a staggering 180 kilograms!
We wanted to design a sustainable product that encourages children to play intuitively, to move while doing so and to become creative
Stapelstein products can support the development and learning ability of children from the age of one and benefit cognition, creativity and social skills as well as motor skills in children of all ages. From a parent’s point of view, children can play safely and happily in the house using their stepping stones to move their bodies and fire their imaginations, while the toys themselves look pleasing to the eye and can be piled up to become quite literally, part of the furniture. A kids’ toy that, dare we say it, really stacks up!
