Best Innovative Product Design | Junior Design Awards 2024

Here are the leading, design-led and innovative products that were scored by the Junior Design Awards judges

Winner:GOLD Best Innovative Product Design

Who:SKÅGFÄ

What:KLYV Kids Knife

Why:

Getting kids involved in the kitchen is always a good idea and can really help foster a positive relationship with food and a sense of confidence. Letting kids use sharp knives is always a worry but SKÃ…GFÄ’s cleverly designed KLYV knife is specially tailored for small hands, helping kids get to grips (quite literally) with this fundamental cooking skill. The panel felt this design looked good, felt good and would help children feel part of food prep while staying safe. The eco-conscious aspect of the knife – it is made with 30% wheat straw and packaged sustainably also impressed the JDA panel.

Innovative solutions for toddlers.

Jennifer Cattaui, founder of Babesta, New York, @babesta

This is such a cool knife. The design is beautiful, the feel, the colours… Perfect for cutting vegetables or preparing breakfast.

Sergei Urban, educational content maker and author, @thedadlab

Giving kids their own set of equipment in the kitchen is such a good idea for getting them excited about cooking and eating. This easy-to-grip knife would make such a great gift for a budding chef!

Bonita Turner, Editor of Junior, @juniormagazineonline

My kids were desperate to graduate to chopping duties when they were little and I know these knives would have given them a real sense of independence and pride in the kitchen.

Winner:SILVER Best Innovative Product Design

Who:Ubbi

What:Ubbi Nappy Bin

Why:

This sleek, aesthetically pleasing nappy bin not only impressed our judges with its
contemporary design and easy-to-operate sliding lid with rubber seal but for its clever, easy to clean, stainless steel interior, which doesn’t absorb odours and precludes the need for a plastic bin liner, making it a much more sustainable option.

This is such a stylish nappy bin that will look good in any room of the house. I like the robust rubber seal that stops odours escaping and the stainless steel interior is genius.

Bonita Turner, Editor of Junior, @juniormagazineonline

This is such a well-considered design and I can see it making a great food recycling caddy when the nappy days are finally over!

Winner:BRONZE Best Innovative Product Design

Who:Eyas London

What:The Gallery: Sensory baby toy

Why:

The JDA Panel was excited by this sweetly illustrated, black and white sensory image
gallery that can be clipped to the inside of a pram roof, lying directly in your baby’s field of vision. Our judges agreed that this was a clever innovation that would give little ones something to entertain them on journeys while stimulating eye development. The brand’s endorsement from UK paediatricians and child development specialists impressed the judges, who felt this would make a lovely gift for a new baby.

It's always amazing to see how fascinated babies are by black and white imagery. I really like the naïve graphics on this image gallery, which is so simple to attach to any pram or buggy.

Bonita Turner, Editor of Junior, @juniormagazineonline

A lovely way to keep babies entertained and stimulated when you’re busy steering the pram. I like the fact that this can quickly and easily be added or removed from the pram and stowed neatly away in its pouch.
