The Designer Behind The BabyBjörn Miracle
David Thalén, designer of the award winning BabyBjörn Miracle, on what makes a great infant carrier
Why do you think well designed baby/children’s products have gained such prominence in recent years?
Parents of today are very conscious consumers and well informed. The variety of products is enormous. This keeps us as a company on our toes. We want our products to be everyday products, and everyday products should be well designed.
What is it about the Miracle’s design that sets it apart from the competition?
A BabyBjorn baby carrier is always designed from the babies' need and out. When we know that the baby is safe and comfortable we start considering the needs and wishes of the parent. What makes Miracle unique is the combination of comfort and well being for the baby and the parent.
What are you most proud of design-wise about the Miracle?
That the flexible carrying system turned out so well. The positive feedback from families all over the world makes me proud. Design wise I am very fond of the twisted seams around the arms and legs, an example where form follows function.
Who or what is your design icon?
Functionalism is definitely an inspiration, form follows function.
What influences came into play when designing the Miracle?
I am convinced that the key to good ergonomics is variation. The inspiration comes from all the test families I meet every day, on top of that I found out I was going to be a father in the process.
What three words best describe the Miracle?
Embracing, flexible and comfortable
