There’s a particular kind of family holiday every parent dreams about — the one where the children are genuinely happy, the adults actually get to relax, and nobody spends the entire trip counting down to bedtime. Somehow, Bedruthan Hotel & Spa manages to deliver exactly that — and more.
Perched high above the golden sands of Mawgan Porth on Cornwall’s north coast – this luxury motel-style retreat, inspired by California desert houses, has been family-run since 1959 and is very much the kind of place families return to year after year. After one stay, it’s easy to understand why — we really weren’t ready to leave after our half-term break.
It has all the ingredients of a luxury coastal escape: dramatic sea views, beautiful interiors, a calming spa and pool areas and excellent food (the breakfasts alone are worth mentioning). But most importantly, it understands the realities of travelling with children no matter what age.
Firstly, it isn’t one of those overly polished hotels where parents spend the entire time whispering “sit still” or “be quiet” through gritted teeth. Nor is it an “organised fun” kids-first resort where adults quietly surrender all hope of relaxation. Instead, it sits perfectly in the middle and is all the more wonderful for it.
"Bedruthan feels luxurious without ever feeling intimidating - the best kind of hotel in my book."
Here are a few reasons this coastal hideaway should be on your Cornwall bucket list:
Family-Friendly Rooms
We stayed in one of the coastal family rooms and loved how relaxed and spacious it felt – even with a teenager in tow on a large sofabed. The interiors were simple and calming, with enough room for all of us to properly spread out after long days on the beach. One of the nicest touches was the chair overlooking the ocean – such a lovely spot for a morning coffee or simply sitting quietly admiring the view.
The bathroom was also surprisingly spacious, which makes such a difference when travelling with children. And for those with a sense of humour, the bathroom window looking into the bedroom definitely raised a few laughs during our stay!
The Wild Cafe is family friendly – and offers a vast menu.
The Scandi-style of the Ogo restaurant is best reserved for adults.
Excellent Food without the Formality
From slow breakfasts overlooking the sea to relaxed evening dinners, the food options feel elevated yet completely unfussy – and ideal for families.
We found ourselves spending most of our time in the Wild Café, which quickly became our go-to spot for lazy breakfasts and easy dinners after the beach. If you can, head down early to grab one of the tables by the huge windows overlooking the Atlantic – especially at sunset, when the light over Mawgan Porth is genuinely beautiful.
For something a little more grown-up, the hotel’s restaurant Ogo offers a more intimate dining experience, although younger guests are still welcome during earlier dinner sittings. The menu changes regularly and has a strong focus on local produce and seasonal cooking.
The thoughtful approach to sustainability is echoed at breakfast too. Rather than a traditional all-you-can-eat hot buffet (to reduce food waste), mornings are centred around a generous continental offering, with the option to order cooked dishes for an additional charge. Honestly though, we never felt the need. The selection was vast – filled croissants (we may have warmed up a few ham and cheese ones every morning!), fruit, yoghurts, bircher, pastries and cinnamon buns that were genuinely hard to resist.
The bakery downstairs was another highlight, with a daily-changing menu of pastries, cakes and coffee that could oh-so-easily become part of your daily routine.
A Spa Parents will Actually Use
And, Why the Children are just as Happy as the Grown-Ups!
One of the things Bedruthan does particularly well is recognising that family holidays should feel enjoyable for parents too. The hotel offers a thoughtful mix of childcare, kids’ clubs, pools and creative workshops, making it genuinely possible for grown-ups to carve out a little downtime without feeling guilty about it.
A Crèche and Kids’ ClubThey Wont Want to Leav
Whether you’re the kind of family who spends every moment together on holiday, or one that benefits from the occasional little bit of space, Bedruthan gets the balance right. As you’d expect the kids’ offering feels informal, relaxed and genuinely fun rather than overly structured.
For younger children, the Play Space Crèche (for under 5s) offers two-hour sessions filled with crafts, stories, music and child-led play, all run by an Enhanced DBS-checked team.
For older children (aged 5+), Kids Club sessions run during school holidays, giving parents the chance to sneak off to the spa or enjoy a quiet coffee/sundowner.
Prices start from: £15 for a two-hour session for children over two (under 2s are £20), while Kids Club sessions for over 5s are £15 for two hours.
Creative Workshops for All Ages
The lovely creative thread running throughout the hotel is brought to life with some low-pressure family workshops, that encourage everyone (even the non-crafters) to get involved. Think crafts, painting and hands-on activities that feel more about making memories than perfection. For adults, there are more mindful creative sessions too, from pottery and lino printing to macramé – ideal if you fancy trying something new while on holiday.
And, Dogs are Included!
Pools To Suit Everyone
The pool set-up works especially well for families. There’s a large indoor swimming pool where children can happily splash about, alongside an adults-only hydro pool overlooking the Atlantic for parents wanting something a little calmer. During warmer months, the outdoor pools are a lovely addition too – particularly the heated toddler pool for younger children. There is also a lifeguard/staff member on sit at all times.
Dogs are genuinely welcomed rather than simply tolerated here. There are thoughtful touches throughout including: dedicated dog menus in both restaurants – meaning your four-legged companion can enjoy a treat while you eat. If you’d rather have a quieter evening in, there’s even a Doggy Room Service menu, perfect for cosy nights back in your room after a windswept beach walk.
