Picture Book Of The Year *Highly Commended*
Slightly Invisible by Lauren Child Orchard Books, £10.99, 3+
The inspiration for Lauren Child’s latest visit to Charlie and Lola land occurred at a book signing. “A little boy said to me, almost under his breath, ‘Can Charlie please do something naughty for once!’” It was a light-bulb moment and inspired Child to return to the dynamic duo after eight years. In typical Child fashion, the book tells a fabulously fun tale of how Charlie finally loses his patience with Lola, telling her to leave him and Marv to play in peace. What follows is an inventive tale of invisible magic potions, scary green monsters and a rabbit. With its signature collage-style drawings and vibrant use of prints and swirling typography, this is a witty book that reminds us why we fell in love with Charlie and Lola in the first place.
