The topsy turvy, wonderful world of Alice in Wonderland is set to combine with the masterful game of chess in a magical event to be hosted at Fortnum & Mason.
Acclaimed chess master, Jason Kouchak, will be at the London store on Saturday May 11, from 12pm-4pm, to host a masterclass for children in board tactics. Players will meet their match on a giant chessboard with concert sized pieces, supplied by quirky London shop, Alice Through the Looking Glass.
Alice Through the Looking Glass, a central London boutique, is a curious shop brimming with an arrary of Alice memorabilia including first edition books and framed illustrations. The star piece, adorning the back wall, is a handpainted chess board decorated with illustrations drawn by the original Wonderland artist, John Tenniel.
The board, which inspired the set up of the whole shop, is for sale at £100,000, but has been replicated, and finished with real gold, for a considerably more affordable, £3,500.
Another attractive reason to visit the Cecil Road boutique is to meet the shop's resident rabbit: Harley. A giant white creature, who has made the front shop window his home, with further burrows that lead underneath the shop. It simply adds to the fittingly surreal setting.
The upcoming chess event at Fortnum & Mason promises to give an insight into a fiendishly clever game, with a wonderful twist, as well as being set in one of London's finest department stores. And you don't even have to fall through any rabbit holes to get there.
