CHECK-IN: Martinhal Lisbon Chiado Family Suites
“The World’s First City Center Elegant Family Hotel” is not a claim Martinhal Hotels use lightly. This luxury family travel brand (and Junior Design Award winners no less) born in Portugal offers the perfect city base offering quality services, elegant rooms and comfort in the heart of Lisbon, with its 5* Martinhal Lisbon Chiado Family Suites. Making city breaks getaways an enjoyable family affair.
Martinhal Lisbon Chiado is a mere 25 minutes from the Faro airport by taxi – meaning even the smallest of travellers will arrive with a smile. Once down the winding roads and cobbled streets you are greeted by a magnificent apartment-hotel complex that lines one of the narrow streets of Chiado. Chiado is the name of a square and its surrounding area in the city located between the neighbourhoods of Bairro Alto and Baixa Pombalina. Being so centrally located near shops, restaurants and transport options meaning families can make the most of their holidays within these cozy self-catering studios and apartments, with an on-site kids club (with evening babysittng services) and the M Bar – a casual family restaurant.
As you would expect from Martinhal every room is designed with families in mind- every little detail is taken care of allowing you to fully enjoy quality time together whilst exploring the beautiful city of Lisbon. With various options to chose from including 1 and 2 bed apartments, studios – some with separate bedrooms for children and bunkbeds. Each apartment has a kitchen complete with a stove, dishwasher, washer-dryer, fridge and basic crockery, cutlery and pots and pans – meaning you can easily sightsee all day and then cook back at the room and stick to your families usual routine. Baby cots, stools for the bathroom, monitors, potties and many other baby essentials are all available too. We stayed in a superior deluxe apartment – and as you can see it offers so much more space and comfort than many city centre hotels. As the living space allows you to really feel at home – and means kids can play, read, watch TV and relax after a busy day.
THE BATHROOM SHELF:
As with all Martinhal properties throughout Portugal the bathroom is stocked with the organic, seaweed based Voya Products which are suitable for young skin too.
THE KIDS CLUB:
If you have visited a Martinhal Hotel before you will know that kids are core to the Martinhal experience – and are catered for just as adults are – to an impeccable standard that makes them feel part of the holiday too. This include a creche, kids clubs and babysitting club (covering the ages of 6 months to early teens ), ran by qualified and friendly childcare staff, play room filed with books, toys and fun activities, quiet corners and of course, kid friendly meals that are healthy and delicious.
What’s special about the kids club at Martinhal Lisbon Chiado is the Pyjama Club. An evening sitting service where a big tent filled with squashy Fatboy puffs makes for a perfect evening of activities in a cosy environment for children – meaning parents can enjoy a night out in the city on there own to experience the bars and restaurants – knowing the children are safe and secure (and hopefully asleep!) for when you return. Children are encouraged to attend in their pjs too for added fun factor.
The relaxed M Bar Family Cafe near the lobby at Chiado offers breakfast, lunch and light snacks – but, is closed from early evening as most guests will eat out in the city or cook in their apartment (although, M Bar can arrange a room service delivery from the full menu too). As with all Martinhal restaurants the kids menu is never an afterthought – their meals ar equally as tempting as the adults. Breakfast at Chiado is a buffet and will set you up for a day of sightseeing and trips ahead. Breakfast baskets with patisserie items, fruit, milk, yoghurt, jams with fresh orange juice can be delivered to your room in the morning if you prefer a lazier start to the day.
Also, make time for few snaps in its famous VW Campervan (now a trademark play vehicle for kids like in all the other Martinhal properties and restaurants), except at Chiado it has become a BMW Isetta, much more appropriate for the city driving.
We loved that children had a mini sized Martinhal robes and some bright coloured flip-flops left on their beds to really enjoy a city hotel stay in style. In fact the robes were such a hit we think they should roll them out to the others resorts too!
THE KIDS PACKING LIST:
Every city break starts with a good travel guide. We love this children’s one by Catarina Cardoso (and actually picked it up in The Time Out Market in Lisbon). For those cobbled streets a pair of trainers are a must and don’t forget a backpack, water bottle and some easy to carry roll-on sun lotion. And, for some city sightseeing scrapbooking a compact Polaroid camera and a cute travel journal will help little ones remember this city getaway.
