Looking for a luxury coastal getaway that suits all the family? Then look no further than Raithwaite Estate. Set in 100 acres of beautiful, tranquil moorland in a unique position on the Yorkshire coast, Raithwaite Estate is a grand-feeling retreat comprised of two hotels, a collection of quaint private stone cottages, an ultra-exclusive Lake House and a tranquil spa.
Raithwaite Estate is a short 10-minute drive from the historic town of Whitby and within walking distance of the beautiful Sandsend beach, which is situated along the iconic Cleveland Way, the estate is perfectly situated for exploring the rugged and untouched North Yorkshire coast.
With many options for families with children of all ages, guests can choose from 45 elegant hotel rooms in The Hall and 28 rooms in The Keep, or one of eight self-catering stone cottages in The Fold. For bigger groups or family get togethers, there is also a Lake House that has six bedrooms and sits privately away from the hotel and cottages.
WHAT TO DO
Particularly good for older children, Raithwaite estate is encouraging families to embrace the spirit of adventure with the launch of ‘Rewilding’ experiences for over 8s, including bushcraft, archery, axe throwing, air rifle shooting, spoon carving and campfire cooking. All of the Rewilding experiences take place in Raithwaite’s extensive woodland and dedicated Bush Craft Camp. Each activity is led by a rewilding expert and is tailored to suit the ages and experience of each group. There are a number of ‘Rewilding’ set dates which run throughout the year and private sessions can also be arranged.
During a stay at Raithwaite, guests can head out on the Cleveland Way, walk the North York Moors, go horse-riding, or try paddle boarding. And, Sandsend Beach is just a ten-minute walk away and perfect for rock pooling, while Runswick Bay, Robin Hood’s Bay and Whitby are all within close reach by car.
A great option for families, the cottages at Raithwaite offer a relaxed self-catering option with a luxurious open plan kitchen and living space and some cottages are also dog-friendly. We stayed in Pheasant House, a cottage with three bedrooms, two bathrooms (including one en-suite) and a huge upstairs living space with open plan kitchen and dining area, complete with a washer dryer machine that we made use of during our stay. The three double beds in our cottage were large and comfortable with luxury bed linens and furnishings. In the bathrooms there was a choice of Noble Isle bath products. A high chair and cot were set up when we arrived and a stair gate was quickly supplied when we requested it. Though we didn’t use the service, staff offered to pick us up in one of the estate’s buggies to take us over to the main hotel for breakfast or swimming.
THE POOL AREA & SPA
Raithwaite Estate has a great pool area which is free to use for all guests – the perfect place to unwind after exploring the great outdoors! Complete with a jacuzzi, sauna, relaxation room and steam room, spa treatments can also be booked, but make sure you do this in advance! The pool is open daily for family sessions from 10am-12pm and then again 4-6pm. I was really impressed with the large, accessible shower room in the ladies’ bathroom which made it easy to get the children showered and changed after our swimming session.
Raithwaite offers many dining possibilities. The Brasserie combines the best of French dining with wholesome and hearty Yorkshire food in a relaxed atmosphere. Poachers Bar is perfect for a morning coffee, lunch and evening drinks and guests can also enjoy a traditional afternoon tea in the Conservatory with panoramic views over Raithwaite’s beautiful gardens, which sit seamlessly amongst natural surrounding moorland. We stayed on a self-catering basis but a delicious breakfast at Poachers Bar was included. We enjoyed a Full English breakfast, Eggs Florentine and the kids chose toast and sausages!
THE KIDS PACKING LIST
UK weather is always unpredictable. It was very wet when we were there, so we’d definitely recommend taking wellies and rainwear so you can still get out and about. For kids, the beach is fun whatever the weather, so buckets and spades are also a must! These were provided for us in our cottage, which was a really nice touch!
Stays at Raithwaite start from £135 per night on a B&B basis. For more information, go to www.raithwaiteestate.com.
