Mums and business partners Jemma Watts and Lucy Down are the founders of baby and children’s brand Molly & Moo. With design conscious parents in mind, the duo design beautiful and stylish ‘little necessities’ for day-to-day life with little ones.
We caught up with them to discuss how they started their brand and how they juggle friendship, business and motherhood.
How did you two meet? And when did you have your light bulb moment?
Lucy: We first met over 10 years ago whilst working in Finance at John Lewis. I remember one day in particular when we were taking part in a team event on a riverboat in Cambridge. We were chatting and Jemma confided that her dream was to open a small boutique and I enthused about my passion for baby photography and branding.
Fast forward nine years and our ‘light-bulb moment’ came when we had returned to work following maternity leave. We were chatting about a shared frustration at not being able to buy simple, stylish, unisex baby essentials – everything was either blue or pink or covered in loud print. That was it for us and we’d found our niche.
Who could have know that those two girls standing on that boat chatting about their dreams would one day combine their loves into Molly & Moo?
Describe Molly & Moo in three words…
Just three…that’s hard…. but we’d probably say simple, classic & stylish.
Where do you get your inspiration from when you are designing new pieces for your collection?
Jemma: The environment. It’s is a big influence for us both in terms of choosing organic muslin and buying eco-friendly. We also try to avoid plastic, choosing instead to embrace more environmentally friendly options such as bamboo. Mother nature gives us our colour and design inspiration as well – our palette is loosely based around the muted colours of late summer we have incorporated elements such as stars, trees and raindrops into our designs.
What do you love most about running a business together?
Lucy: We were colleagues first, and business partners second, but now we are friends. That’s the best part. It’s hard running a business, especially alongside another job and being mummies. We share in the ups and we share in the downs, and sometimes Jemma is the only person that truly understands the highlights, stresses or frustrations. It’s nice to have someone to share the journey with.
And finally, what can we look forward to this year from Molly & Moo?
Jemma: We will be working hard over the next few months to establish our range of organic modern baby essentials, including bibs, baby nest covers, thick muslin blankets. We also have lots of new products lined up in the wings to take centre stage once we’re in the position to do so.
