How to grow an avocado tree

You don’t need sunny climes to grow this exotic plant

How to grow an avocado tree
  • After eating an avocado, pierce the stone with three toothpicks around the circumference.
  • Now balance the stone,  half submerged in water, on the rim of a glass and leave somewhere warm inside your house.
  • After roots and shoots begin to sprout (within two to six weeks) you can pot the seed in a small planter with rich, peat free compost.
  • With careful pruning and repotting for growth, your avocado plant can grow as tall as 20m high.
  • It may not bear fruit within the first ten years – or ever – so perhaps don’t bank on a lifetime supply of fresh guacamole, just an enjoyable gardening project.
