JUNIOR DESIGN AWARDS 2020 GOLD WINNER: Best Toy Design 6+ Years

WHO: Plum Play Plum Discovery® – Forest Water Run (premium version)

WHAT: 5 levels of water chutes, locks and runs to give children an outdoor play experience that encourages learning through play and STEM related activities.

WHY: So much fun! Was the general response to this amazing system of water pipes and chutes that gives an added dimension to outdoor play and the pure joy of wet, messy fun. Our judges loved the natural wood and bamboo materials that would make this structure blend into any garden landscape and the addition of a wipeable, easy clean painting screen that can be daubed with paint or, you guessed it – MUD! The option for kids to clip on a hosepipe for a continuous flow of water and a racing gate that allows children to race different objects and creations down the run, really excited the panel as well as a handy step for younger children, which also doubles as a storage box, meaning kids of all sizes can get in on the action. A great toy for encouraging outdoor play, enjoying the elements and developing an understanding of STEM.

What a creative idea in outdoor play! Encouraging the idea of playing outside and using your imagination with the endless opportunities with which this set holds!

Great to encourage outdoor play. I can’t imagine any child that wouldn’t love playing with this - a modern twist on traditional play. Wouldn’t look out of place in any garden or outdoor space. Designed with parents as much as children in mind aesthetically.

JUNIOR DESIGN AWARDS 2020 SILVER WINNER: Best Toy Design 6+ Years

WHO: Yoto Player

WHAT: A carefully connected screen-free speaker and audio library with no camera, no microphone and no advertising, controlled with physical cards.

WHY: Our judges really loved this simple but well designed audio library that gives kids access to an ever-growing curated selection of audiobooks, music, educational activities, podcasts, radio and sound effects without the worry of exposure to the internet or dependence on a screen. Simply listening to content is such a great way of improving concentration and developing imaginations and our judges felt that this was a great way for children to have some autonomy over what, when and where they listened, without adults having to worry about the content they access. The simple cards that activate the audio system were praised for being straight forward and easy-to-use even for those children with mobility issues. Excellent.

If there were one product that I wish had been around when my kids were small, it's this one! I absolutely love how engaging this is and we've always used audio books for 'quiet time' (we had early nap droppers) and this is so much more durable than a CD player. I love that you can add your own recordings to cards too.

Love this idea - encourages children to enjoy books without reading as some children with learning difficulties often shy away from books and miss out on so much. Great to give a child independence with tech and the ease and safety of use promotes that. Really smart compact design that would look great in any child’s room. Uncomplicated and easy to use.

A great way to give kids Technical autonomy that actually the parents control. I love the sleek and fun design.

JUNIOR DESIGN AWARDS 2020 BRONZE WINNER: Best Toy Design 6+ Years

WHO: Sylvanian Families – Deluxe Celebration Home Premium Set

WHAT: A limited edition, large play house for Sylvanian figures that comes with a lift and includes two Persian Cat girls to celebrate Sylvanian Families’ 35th Anniversary. Suitable for ages 3+

WHY: This gorgeous pastel pink play house delighted our judges who thought this grand colonial style home would make a perfect gift for existing Sylvanian fans or anyone wanting to introduce their children to this incredibly cute family. Added extras including a lift, balconies, a gorgeous veranda and creeping vines really impressed our panel and the robust quality of the house made it a piece that they felt could easily be handed down through many children.

Such a beautiful 35th anniversary addition to the Sylvanian collection - what beautiful new colours too!
Bonita Turner, Editor of Junior
