Royal Connection The Royal County of Berkshire is home to Windsor Castle, a favourite royal retreat.

Why visit? The Windsor Great Park is a pleasant place to unwind, with its ornamental gardens, undulating paths and trim polo pitches where you might just spot a prince. The elegant boutiques of Windsor’s grand arcade will divert the discerning shopper while little thrill seekers will appreciate a trip to Legoland or nearby Chessington World of Adventures. Other attractions include the Look Out Discovery Centre in Bracknell, with its whizz-bang science exhibits, and the furred and feathered denizens of Beale Park in Reading.

Dine out at Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck in Bray, famed for its imaginative dishes. Or sample the fabulous fare at Marco Pierre White’s Yew Tree Inn in Newbury.

Stay at The riverside Runnymede-on-Thames Hotel, Egham, which has duck decor and goodies to delight young guests. From £185 per night.
