Check out Deer Rise and Fir Tree Lodge, two wonderfully equipped apartments in a huge house on Lake Windermere’s west shore. Both have open fires and well-equipped kitchens. The duplex Deer Rise in particular is great for families, sleeping six (Fir Tree Lodge on the ground floor sleeps four).
The village of Lakeside is a short walk for the Aquarium of the Lakes, the Lakeside to Haverthwaite Steam Railway and the Gondola (for lake trips). Grizedale Forest is a wonderful walking and cycling area where you can find Beatrix Potter’s Hill Top Farm. From £463 for a week in April or £550 in May.
