Steeped in nostalgia, the Great British Family Holiday is riding a new wave of popularity. And that’s not simply due to the strength of the euro or the credit crunch. The fact is that there’s never been a more varied, enticing or exciting range of activities on offer or places to stay within the UK.

Yes, the weather can be temperamental at times, but it doesn’t rain constantly. In any case, Britain is a great family holiday destination whatever the weather. Children can have just as much fun exploring rock pools on a wind-strafed beach during winter as they can on a boogie board during a summer heatwave. Some of the best highlights in Britain don’t cost a penny – cycling north Devon’s Tarka Trail, or finding the perfect picnic spot in the Lake District.
