Steeped in nostalgia, the Great British Family Holiday is riding a new wave of popularity. And that’s not simply due to the strength of the euro or the credit crunch. The fact is that there’s never been a more varied, enticing or exciting range of activities on offer or places to stay within the UK.

Yes, the weather can be temperamental at times, but it doesn’t rain constantly. In any case, Britain is a great family holiday destination whatever the weather. Some of the best highlights in Britain don’t cost a penny – cycling north Devon’s Tarka Trail, or finding the perfect picnic spot in the Lake District. Here’s my selection of the ten best of British – my holiday wish list for big kids (and their children).
