"Moddershall Oaks is a country spa retreat in Staffordshire offering spa days, spa breaks and treatments and gourmet lakeside dining."
Tucked away in the Staffordshire countryside in historic town of Stone, Moddershall Oaks is a little hidden gem and the perfect setting for a relaxing hideaway. With no mobile phone signal, no one will find you - we saw this as a major plus, but if that makes you feel slightly panicky there is broadband and a landline! The hotel is spotlessly clean, modern and intimate, with only ten luxury suites and a restaurant set in 70 acres of stunning woodland and parkland.
The extensive facilities include a swimming pool, hydrotherapy pool, hot room, sauna, steam room, reflexology foothbaths and more. Even though Eoin was adverse to synchronised magazine reading – a pastime always indulged in with my girl spamates – all was not lost. He even refused to have a treatment, claiming that reading the paper uninterrupted was his idea of total zen. But I didn’t give up. We spent ample time languishing in the hydrotherapy pool, sweating our stress away in the sauna and wading in the hot tub. Then I went off for my wonderful Elemis facial. The spa therapist cleansed and primed my skin with products tailored to my skin type. The treatment also included a facial massage using Eastern techniques which, as advertised, left me feeling radiant.
What we ate
The award-winning hotel restaurant is cosy, with a modern English menu featuring locally sourced ingredients that is extremely well thought out, especially for vegetarians like me. For the main course, there was a choice of a four appetising vegetarian dishes, including a hearty goat's cheese and potato gratin, served with fresh asparagus and wild mushroom fricassee. And for those in need of an extra lift, we can thoroughly recommend selecting the playfully-named Chocolate Rehab dessert, a toothsome concoction comprising soft chocolate fudge cake, vanilla custard and white chocolate panna cotta. With stunning views across the lake, and the exquisite food, it was the highlight of the weekend. After eating, we found a mini bar at the end of the corridor for the suites with bottles of wine and an honesty box so we could help ourselves to a romantic nightcap.
With a slightly fuzzy head from our nightcap, breakfast did not disappoint! I had the vegetarian option, which had all the usual suspects, but with delicious grilled halloumi in place of local bacon and sausages.
Spa breaks start from £150pp, which includes glass of bubbly and nibbles, three-course evening meal, breakfast and use of spa facilities until 5pm on day of departure.
