Germany’s first feng-shui inspired Christmas market

‘Frenzied’ and ‘frantic’ are two words that might well spring to mind when you think about Christmas shopping. But at the Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg, situated on the outskirts of Cologne, things couldn’t be calmer or more convivial...

From December 9–11, the courtyard outside this imposing baroque castle will play host to its Christmas market, with a village of 60 white stalls grouped around the five feng shui elements – earth, metal, water, wood and fire. As you glide effortlessly along on a tide of positive energy, choose from a range of treats and trinkets, among them Aachen Printen – a traditional kind of sweetbread – handmade chocolates, ceramics and jewellery.

The air will be sweetened with the mellow sounds of gospel singers, while the hotel’s hillside position affords spectacular views across Cologne. Sunday is family day, with roaming stiltwalkers and a miniature train ride to entertain little guests. If you’re feeling jolly, don your best outfit for the Father Christmas fancy dressing contest. Discerning young market-goers will be invited to decide on the best-dressed fellow.

December 9, 4–10pm. 
December 10, 11am–11pm.
December 11, 11am–7pm. 



Cost: €6, including a hot drink. Children under 12 are free.

Prices are from 360 Euros per night for a family of four, for a double room deluxe.
