Homebear
Android, iPad, iPhone, iPod touch  From 50p, 3+
Timeless teddy appeal is juxtaposed with Eighties’ platform-style gameplay in this nifty app. When we meet Homebear, he is in a sorry state and far away from home, so he needs your child to help him to return from whence he came. As he hops, flies and bounces through the enchanted forest, farmer’s house and chicken coop, players must help Homebear snap up useful items like pothole-plugging marshmallows to enable him progress to the next level. Colourful, simple graphics will have plenty of appeal for the preschool set, while the varying levels of difficulty present a worthy challenge for children of all ages.

Crayate iPad Free, 2+
See what they did there with the name? This nicely rendered drawing app lets your young artist create digital etchings with a virtual crayon. Pick a scene, add an animal and scribble away to your heart’s content. And no matter if your child goes wrong, the “undo” button will see off wayward lines faster than you can say Art Attack.

Chimpact Windows Phone, iPad, iPhone 99p, 5+
This action-packed game takes the time-honoured simian adventure (think Donkey Kong) and cranks it up a notch as your child sends our main monkey careering around the jungle, picking up lots of bonus points. While jazzy music lends a frenetic feel, one-touch gameplay keeps things simple for children.

Talking Ben Android Free, 2+
The challenge is to attract the attention of Ben the dog, a retired chemistry professor who enjoys nothing more than peace, quiet and newspapers. Once your child has lured the sweet and scruffy canine out of his life of solitude with talking and tickling, he can join Ben for a tinker in his laboratory, or just chat to him on the phone.
