Although the economy is picking up, holiday firms can still fail, so ensure your money is safe with the following advice:

- Pay by credit card – you’ll be protected for flights over £100 by the Consumer Credit Act 1974 if your supplier goes bust.

- Book through a tour operator who is ATOL-protected and has paid into the ATOL bond as client protection in the event of failure.

- Book through ABTA travel agents, who are also ATOL bonded.

- Take out insurance that includes ‘holiday financial failure’ even if you’ve booked all the component parts of your holiday separately. Visit the Covered2go website that is designed to include everything outside the ATOL. Tel: 0844 482 7755 or visit
