Ever had that nagging feeling that you really ought to know the local emergency number – but only after you arrive? A survey has revealed that at least a third of travellers admit they would not know how to call a local ambulance while they were abroad. But now there is a new service, smsSOS, that will help put your mind at rest. All you have to do is send one text (costing £1 plus your normal network rate) and you’ll receive all the essential emergency numbers at your destination. For example, text ‘Spain’, to 80818, and you will receive a text containing numbers for police, fire, and medical services, plus the local British Consulate (for repatriation in the event of lost passports and other support).
