"The idea of Ethan traipsing off to school in shorts makes me chuckle and think of posh schools (growing up in Scotland it wasn’t really the weather for shorts). But, he actually looks good in his, and suddenly so much older than his four years!

All the shorts come with adjustable waists and pockets, while prices ranged from £4 to £8. Nutmeg (at Morrisons) has some extra pockets on the legs, which make them look a bit more combat like. Plus rather than the simple hook and bar fastening their shorts have a button, which younger kids may find fiddly. Almost all the manufacturers claim their products to be water and stain repellent, not to mention crease resistant. We’ll certainly be testing those claims in the weeks ahead."

VERDICT: "They may be more expensive but they felt far higher quality and a more comfortable waistband so it’s Marks & Spencer for us. Though we haven’t worked out what the tiny pocket with a button on the front is for..."
