YO! Sushi
Perfect dining in pint-sized portions
A carousel of dinky little plates in a rainbow of colours, each one hosting a delicate portion of nibble-sized treats, dance past in an attempt to seduce: Eat me! Eat me! What could be more fun? Armed with a pair of child’s chopsticks and an activity sheet for playing a game of spot-the-dish, four-year-old Joseph was in his element. Appointing himself as the one in charge of picking everyone’s chosen dish from the conveyor belt – as well as being super-attentive in the refilling of water glasses from the push-button dispenser on the counter – the only drawback was that Joe was so distracted by the exciting spectacle of it all that he wasn’t that keen on eating. Such are the delights of Yo Sushi for youngsters.
The adults, however, had no such hesitation, choosing from an exciting selection of sushi, as well as some hot dishes ordered from the kitchen. With prices of the colour-coded plates ranging from £1.70 to £5, Nigiri (oblong rice with salmon or prawn) were popular staples, though Joe preferred to pull off the fish and just eat the rice. Being a confirmed carnivore, he wolfed down both Chicken and Salmon Teriyaki (see recipe, right) and for the grown-ups Miso Black Cod was a winner.
Other highlights were the delicious Seared Beef, Prawn Tempura and Edamame (salted blanched soy beans) that were so moreish we managed to demolish four portions! The only letdown was the watery Crayfish Salad. After successfully completing his activity sheet, Joe was rewarded with his prize of a complimentary Dorayaki, a delicious dessert of Japanese pancake with custard filling and raspberry sauce – the perfect sweet finale for a fulfilling afternoon.
