The May Fair Hotel Film Club
Enjoy a leisurely Sunday brunch followed by a family movie at The May Fair Hotel
DINNER AND A movie. That concept might seem like an all too distant memory once you have children. But how about the modern new way of thinking? How about Sunday brunch, followed by a family movie? That’s the offering at The May Fair Hotel, the chic and swanky establishment much loved by the celebrity crowd. The design of the hotel is contemporary, cool and stark – Starckesque even. The sultry bar oozes sex appeal – I'm sure there's many a romantic overture played out in the wee small hours. At just past noon on a Sunday afternoon, however, it's a much more innocent clientele of families enjoying a cosy Sunday brunch before heading to the spacious 200-seater private screening room for a movie. Today, it’s the best movie Mr Madonna ever made: Sherlock Holmes.
First, though, it’s time to fill your belly. The Brunch menu includes classics like Scrambled Eggs & Smoked Salmon, or Blueberry Pancakes with Maple Syrup. Thinking ahead (at the prospect of not having to cook later) we went for the more substantial offering: Fish & Chips (served very artistically in a mock newspaper from 1927, the day The May Fair Hotel first opened for business); a Steak Sandwich and a Hamburger & Chips. Our youngest guest, Joe, was the only one who wanted a breakfast dish, opting for what you might call a Half (as opposed to a Full) English: Sausage, Egg & Baked Beans.
At £25 per adult, with each accompanying child under 12 eating for free, the Film Club is great value and has an exciting menu of forthcoming movies, including a Nanny McFee double bill (October 24) and Finding Neverland (November 21). I was slightly worried that the high drama and action of Sherlock Holmes might be a bit much for Joe. I needn’t have worried. As 14-year-old Grace and I were admiring the charismatic performance by Robert Downey Junior, Joe settled back in the big leather seat and drifted off into a deep sleep, only stirring to occasionally offer a well-time snore to add to the suspense of the action
The May Fair Family Film Club shows a family movie every third Sunday of the month. The May Fair Hotel, Stratton Street, London, W1J 8LT. For details, tel: 020 75769 4041; www.themayfairhotel.co.uk/filmfood
