Family restaurant of the month, Wagamama: review

Sample a taste of the Orient with the popular pan-Asian chain's new children's menu

Perched at a large wooden table, beneath a canopy and basking in the warmth of an overhead heater, there can be few more perfect spots on the South Bank to watch the world go by. The menu of delicious fare with an Eastern flavour, however, is something of a pleasant distraction. Do we fancy noodles thick or thin, cooked on a flat griddle, or swimming in a big bowl of soup? We could opt for a healthy salad, or a spicy curry. One thing’s for sure: we will need a couple of orders of our favourite Edamame Soya Beans, with a sprinkling of salt.

In my experience, Wagamama has always proved a very palatable option for family dining – you can’t go far wrong with chicken on a skewer and a bowl of sticky rice. But now there’s a new children’s menu “for little grown-ups”, featuring mini mains of Cod Cubes Deep-fried In Panko Breadcrumbs (£4.05), Grilled Chicken Noodle with a healthy side order of Chopped Carrot, Sweetcorn, Cucumber And Amai Sauce (£4.35) or a mini Yasai Katsu Curry made from tasty sweet potato and butternut squash (£3.30).

There’s also a cute new mascot Hoshi, which means “Star” in Japanese, designed by those creative folk at Okido magazine. In tune with this funky Japanese theme, your child can enjoy fun Noodle Doodle activities, with a word search featuring Japanese dishes and a spot the difference game.

Our delicious dishes definitely hit the spot, with Joe enjoying his first taste of Edamame (probably because his big sister usually wolfs them down before he has a chance to get stuck in), licking off the salt but enjoying the bean that popped out, too. For desserts, we tried every exotic frozen yoghurt on offer: Citrus Yuzu, Strawberry And Five Spices, and Toffee And Black Cumin Seed, while Joe opted for a scoop of Dairy Vanilla Pod Ice Cream, which he deemed so good that he had to order two more!
