Great British Bake Off's Holly Bell presents: Cauliflower and Broccoli Cheese FAMILY RECIPE

Baby food brand Organix has teamed up with Holly Bell, finalist in the Great British Bake Off and author of Recipes from a Normal Mum, to create the 'Babies Who Lunch' campaign.

Babies Who Lunch encourages parents to share their weaning experiences, and to get together at mealtimes with other parents and their children. Psychologists state that social experiences have a positive impact on children becoming more open to trying new foods.

TRY HOLLY BELL'S CAULIFLOWER BROCCOLI AND CHEESE, SUITABLE FOR BOTH BABIES AND TODDLERS. CHECK OUT THE RECIPE AND HOLLY'S TIPS BELOW.

"I love this dish for its universal appeal. Everyone in the family enjoys it, from six months to 40 years! Experiment with different strength cheeses to see what your baby likes best. I used a medium cheddar to start with… I always boil a couple of pieces of peeled broccoli stalk to offer as finger foods, they seem to be easier to hold than the florets." Holly Bell.

Makes about 30 ice cube sized portions.

Ingredients:

  • 20g broccoli (about 10 small florets)
  • 105g cauliflower (about 6 small florets)
  • 30g unsalted butter
  • 15g plain flour
  • A little freshly grated nutmeg
  • 245mls whole milk
  • 70g cheddar cheese, grated

Method:

  1. Boil the broccoli and cauliflower on the hob until a knife passes through the stalks easily.
  2. Drain and leave to cool a little.
  3. Melt the butter in a small saucepan over a low heat then add the flour and nutmeg and whisk well until melted.
  4. Allow the flour to cook for about a minute at this heat then add the milk gradually, whisking continually. Keep whisking and turn the heat up a little.
  5. After about 5 minutes the white sauce should have thickened a little.
  6. Remove from the heat and add the cheese. Stir well.
  7. Allow to cool for 5 minutes then add the broccoli and cauliflower before either serving with some sticks of cheddar cheese or pureeing for younger babies.

Tips:

Keeps in the fridge in an airtight container for three days or freezes well for one month. Defrost in the fridge overnight and reheat on the hob or in the microwave until piping hot. Stir well and always check the heat of baby food before serving.
