Thankfully, Rural Retreats has added 25 new properties to its portfolio of unique country cottages including The Gates, a medieval house in the idyllic village of Castle Combe. With features such as a Gothic window from the original church, the property retains its original character, but has luxurious, modern facilities. It sleeps six and costs from £1,111 for a week. 

If you’d prefer a sea view, you can book The Crag, on Britain’s most southerly spot – Lizard Point, Cornwall. Built in 1910, the property sleeps nine, so is great for family gatherings. A path runs down to Housel Beach, a small sandy cove, and there is a large patio facing the sea for warm summer nights. One week starts from £3,520.
