Materials
- 2 cups of flour
- 3 cups of water
- 1 round balloon
- Newspaper
- Paint, crayons or markers
- Coloured crepe paper
- String
METHOD
1. First, start with the balloon. This will form the body of your pinata, so using a round balloon is best. Inflate it to the size you would eventually like your pinata to be.
2. Now the fun really starts by creating some sticky stuff to start decorating your pinata. Fill a bowl with flour and add water until you have a thick mixture, around the consistancy of wallpaper paste
3. Tear some newspaper into strips about an inch thick. Dip these strips into the flour glue to make paper-mache. Make sure the newspaper is well-saturated and lay down the gooey strips all over the balloon. Make sure to leave a hole at the top of the balloon but completely cover the rest of it in a thick layer of paper mache. Leave the balloon to dry until it is stiff. Once the balloon has dried, you can add more layers of paper mache, but not too many, or else the pinata will be very difficault to break.
5. When dry, pop and remove the balloon through the hole you left at the top.
6. Decide what you are going to make your pinata into. The options are as endless as your imagination. It could be an animal, a cartoon character, a shape etc. Now you can start to make your pinata look pretty by painting it. Choose a colour that matches the crepe paper you'll be adding on or to match the animal that your turning your your pinata into.
7. Once painted, glue colourful crepe paper onto the outside of the pinata to decorate it. You could also add googly eyes or painted eyes, a nose, a mouth etc.
8. Punch two small holes at the top and thread a large piece of string through the two holes so that you will be able hang your pinata up.
9. Through the hole at the top, fill your pinata with sweets, chocolate, toys or any other goodies that tickle your fancy.
10. Choose a a place to tie your pinata. A tree branch in the garden is an ideal location. An indoors location is fine but make sure to protect the mantelpiece from the stick-wielding frenzy of the children.
Finally, it is time to blindfold the participants – and to the winner the spoils!
