ISN'T IT A bore how housework somehow puts a dampener on the day? Well, maybe you are one of those creatures, like Monica out of Friends, who is never happier than when donning a pair of Marigolds and getting stuck into the housework. Not so, Groovy Mama. Personally, I can always find other ways to enjoy my days.
However, I was intrigued to hear about a new Black & Decker Steam Mop that promises to make swift work of mucky floors. To put the appliance thoroughly through its paces, I even allowed the children to trample their muddy festival boots across my wooden floors. And here's the real beauty - as the name suggests, The Steamer cleans with steam (and gives a very nicely satisfying noise as whizzes along) so there's no need for harsh chemicals – the heat does all the work. It has a handy little knob to turn, with an easy-to-discern dial (ie, with a picture of a wooden floor, marble or laminate) so the dimwits know which level of heat to use – the makers call it "Autoselect technology”. And, as a nod to aesthetics, the guage gives off a gorgeous blue glow when it's ready to use.
The verdict: The Steam Mop is quick and easy to use (thought of course you do have to sweep up first – what I really want is a magic sweeper, too, or children that don't molt – otherwise your mop head will get very mucky). It moves smoothly, though some stains may take a few attempts to shift. Compact style; lightweight to use, with moveable handle and an effective and quick solution for dirty floors.
