Meet a manatee

Swimming with dolphins is a family favourite, but how about getting up close and personal with sea cows – a totally new experience in Asia

A great opportunity is now available at the Anantara Si Kao Resort & Spa, a new hotel that forms part of the Chao Mai National Park in the Si Kao district of southern Thailand. Manatees, or sea cows, are normally more associated with Florida, but the limpid waters off Anantara Si Kao have their own population of dugongs, as they’re known here. Families can watch these gentle creatures from a boat or snorkel close to them. A day out including the boat trip, a picnic, snorkelling, kayaking and a nature walk costs £30 per person. The Dugong children’s club in the resort offers Thai-themed activities including a children’s kayak tour; snorkelling lessons and coconut bowling; the whole family can join in with T-shirt painting and kite building, trips on longtail boats and sea kayaking around the dramatic limestone cliffs and towers that characterise this coastal stretch, or cycling in the rain forest.

Seven nights for a family of four in an Anantara suite costs from £2,100.
