Z is for Zoo

Britain has some of the finest animal sanctuaries in the world. Here are our top three choices: ZSL Whipsnade Zoo (www.zsl.org/whipsnade), was founded in 1826. It is home to 6,405 animals, many of which are endangered and covers 600 acres.

Twycross Zoo (www.twycrosszoo.com) in Leicestershire attracts 500,000 visitors a year and is famous for its collection of primates including the UK’s only group of bonobos chimpanzees.

London Zoo (www.zsl.org/zsl-london-zoo) was opened to the public in 1847 and now houses a collection of 704 species of animals, the largest in the UK. It opened the first reptile house, aquarium and insect house. Visit the gorilla kingdom and the Komodo Dragon enclosure
