Robert and Cortney Novogratz created seven gorgeous children and six New York renovations in just 15 years. Now called Sixx Design, here they tell their story…
This was all that was important. He also told us to get three bids for a contractor and to go with the middle bid. When the bids came in, we couldn’t even afford the lowest bid. We ended up hiring Aaron, a 22-year-old family friend and apprentice carpenter who’d just moved to New York.
Neither of us knew anything about building, renovating or construction, but, as we had very little money, we learned fast. We had a few things in our favour: we both loved the chaos, we didn’t stress over the little things, and we worked well as a team. The only problem was that we had absolutely no idea what we were doing.
Our next step was to find an architect. People suggested that we find a young, upstart firm, that they might be affordable. We found such a firm, and the first thing they wanted to do was measure the house, which would cost $12,000. Instead, we spent $2.99 on a tape measure and began our career as architects.
