If you are looking for inspiration for your child’s bedroom, Kate suggests thinking back to what you yourself loved as a child. “I love simplicity, but I also like it to be fun,” she says. “If something makes you smile, that’s key.” Kate is not averse to cutting out pages from a picture book and sticking them on the wall. “Don’t feel guilty,” she says. “There are so many beautiful books with beautiful illustrations out there, and if it is something you love, why not share it? When it’s on the wall, you and your child can appreciate it every day.”
Found things are often the best, says Kate, “because of the stories behind them.” By this, she means the things you collect on your travels and bring home, not really knowing where you will put them – like the tiny orange stool Kate and Patrick found in a second-hand store earlier this year. Underneath the stool, the year ‘1942’ is inscribed next to the name ‘Almer’ – which just happens to be the name of a road just round the corner from Rose Cottage.
