On a set of shelves sits a friendly clutter of books, soft toys, photographs and cards. A vase of fabric flowers adds a splash of colour and the walls are decorated with framed Belle & Boo prints. There is also a wide assortment of accessories scattered about including knitted toys and wooden letters “which I love, as they bring Robyn’s name into the room,” says Kate.
A vintage ABC storybook was a present from Kate’s long-time friend, Mandy Sutcliffe, with whom Kate formed Belle & Boo 18 months ago. Belle & Boo – a little girl and her bunny friend – are Mandy’s favourite characters and were created in Mandy’s sketching sessions in Parisian parks during a three-month exchange trip to Paris while she was studying at Leeds University. She was inspired by the young French children playing and promenading nearby.
Kate, who had trained as a graphic designer before becoming a Retail Marketing Director at design consultancy CRC, came on board to help expand Mandy’s uniquely illustrated collection of artworks, cards, clothing and homewares. “I have always had an appreciation for the creative,” says Kate, “but I much prefer to be at the strategic end of creative design.”
