“Most of all, I realised that the nursery has to be a space that appeals to both of you, especially at the beginning.”
In fact, before Robyn came along, and before the room was a nursery, the capacious cream sofa was already in situ and Patrick and Kate would often gravitate towards this room to just sit and stare out the window or read. “It just always felt like a calm room,” says Kate. “Now when I’m sitting with Robyn on the sofa I feel like it is our special calm place together.”
The sofa is scattered with cushions covered in vintage textiles. “I found them in a shop in Columbia Road Flower Market called Beyond Fabrics. The maker sources the vintage fabric from America,” says Kate. There is a mix of old and new furniture: there are antique pieces, like the wooden chest that belonged to Kate’s mother, and the leather and wicker chair, which Kate and Patrick found in a dilapidated state in a junk shop in Hove and subsequently set about reupholstering. However, the cream chest of drawers in the corner is brand new from IKEA, but has been given a lift with a set of upbeat striped and spotty doorknobs.
