Robyn’s nursery overlooks the garden, which is surprisingly large and lush for this part of London and lovingly tended to by Patrick, who recently caught the gardening bug. Although it is long and narrow, a south-facing window means the nursery is very light. Built-in cupboards neatly hide extraneous stuff, but anything that “needs to be seen” is left out. This includes a darling pair of tiny sparkling silver shoes, a present from friends when Robyn was born. They still have the gift tag attached, which reads: “Lesson 1: A girl can never have too many shoes.” Maybe it’s me, but just glancing at those shoes can’t help but make the heart sing.
Kate decorated the room herself, and although she started ages in advance – “I am a super-keen, organised person” – she was still adding finishing touches right up until the last minute. Self-confessed romantics – “Patrick and I are both kind of dreamy,” says Kate – the couple were keen to decorate Robyn’s room in a way that brought the outside in. One of the walls is painted sky blue with white fluffy clouds, whilst another wall is adorned with two trees. They look painted on but they are not. “They came as a kit,” says Kate.
