Signature products include the Dombo Mug and the Bronto Chair.

What inspired the Dombo Mug designs?
My own kids. The way children hold a mug and drink from it means the movement of the drinking is exaggerated. The Dombo Mug is as wide as a three-year-old, which makes the drinking fun. The big handles are very handy, too.

Who are your design heroes?
Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, and Gerrit Rietveld, a Dutch furniture designer and architect (1888–1964). He was part of the De Stijl movement and invented modern design. He’s still a big source of inspiration.

What is your philosophy for life? Play as much as you possibly can.

Which of your own designs is your favourite?
My two sons. They were a co-production, of course, but they are still the best things I’ve ever made.

Do you have any golden rules when it comes to design?
When I design something it should add to what already exists and bring joy to the people who use it. Things should be functional, but also humorous, friendly and surprising.|

Did you have a favourite piece of design as a child? Yes – a rocking horse that my dad made for me; that was really fun.

What would be your dream children’s product? So many: a cell phone, a see-saw, a rocking horse.

What’s the best moment of your day? The best by far is after work, when I come home and play with my children before they go to bed.

Dombo Mug £8.50, available at Places and Spaces
