Ashlyn’s mother helped her wallpaper the room with a graphic floral-print design. “That was a great day,” Ashlyn remembers. “I love the metallic sheen the paper has. It creates a really soft reflective light.” Amongst the numerous interesting things to look at, touch and exclaim over, a floor lamp with a shade that’s been partially covered with badges catches the eye. The badges are the sort people attached to their lapels or beanie hats in the Seventies and Eighties, and Ashlyn and Olive have collected them from their various excursions, adding the best to the lamp shade when they get home. “It’s a little project we’ve got going,” explains Ashlyn. “Only one quarter is  covered at the moment, but Olive loves looking out for badges; it won’t be long before it’s completely covered.”

To give the house a sense of unity, Ashlyn painted one party wall – which runs from the downstairs hall, up the staircase and to the two floors above – a dramatic shade of purple. This creates a fabulous backdrop to her wall hangings. “I like the muddiness of the shade, and it works really well with a variety of other colours, such as the pink floor in the kitchen.”
