Next door to the bathroom, a workroom-cum-office is chock full with samples, fabric swatches and new designs that may one day make it into the shop. Given her many years in the fashion industry, Ashlyn is all too aware of the pitfalls small designers face and likes to include their products in her store.

Downstairs, Ashlyn has knocked the two main rooms into one spacious, airy living space. There’s the faint but unmistakable aroma of incense in the air – a nod to Ashlyn’s hippy upbringing. These rooms are decorated with the same eclectic flair as the rest of the house. Seventies leather sofas and swivel chairs, G-Plan furniture and mosaic mirrors providing a funky vibe. Sumptuous grey velvet curtains fall in luxurious puddles on the floor and are cinched with tasselled passementeries. Display cabinets house collections of coloured glass, vintage toy buses, and the delicate champagne glasses Ashlyn’s grandparents drank from on their wedding day. “I get those out when we have parties,” she says. “It’s amazing that they haven’t been broken. But what’s the point of not using them? This is a home, not a museum.”
