Ashlyn’s passion for her work, and her ability to decorate both her home and shop with such an intriguing array of things, probably has a lot to do with her upbringing. “It was a bit of a hippy childhood,” says Ashlyn. “My father was training to be an opera singer and hung out with all sorts of interesting people, and my mother was a teacher and incredibly creative. We moved close to Portobello Road when I was ten. It was the Seventies, when there was a lot more freedom for a child to roam.”

Ashlyn certainly absorbed all the colour, charm and chaos of the era. At 16, she started making jewellery and selling it in Camden Lock during its Eighties heyday. She went on to study footwear design before becoming the Creative Director for Shoes at the hip fashion label Red Or Dead, spending the next ten years travelling the world as part of her job. “I went on the most inspirational trips – India, Budapest, China – when everyone else was just doing New York. Everything I did in those first 20 years of my working life has formed who and where I am now.”
