I’ll never forget picking up my five-year-old son, Oliver, from a playdate and I happened upon the bedroom of the friend’s teenage brother. I saw Jim Morrison posters, a mini fridge, black walls. Oliver’s hand grasped mine. “Cool,” he whispered in awe. The mother appeared. “Wow,” I stammered. “Black walls!” She said she finally let her son paint his room any colour he wished and watched as he swathed the white walls in a sheen of darkness. I said I admired her open-mindedness. She shrugged. “It’s him, after all. Him now.”

I squeezed Oliver’s hand knowing my time to understand would one day come, too. “Besides,” she smiled. “It’s only paint.”
