Author Grace Saunders takes us on a tour of her Victorian family home where tales of romance, travel and adventure are all part of the furniture
The nursery has been accessorised with traditional toys and music boxes that Grace bought from a toy museum discovered on a London backstreet. Besides being gorgeous to look at, they are also playthings for Raphael, while vintage cushions, a silvery cabinet from Portobello Market and an Indian mirror are all quirky one-off pieces. A white sleigh-style cot from Chic Shack was a special purchase. “I bought that with the advance from my book,” says Grace. “I knew that if I didn’t snap it up there and then, I’d regret it.”
Beyond Raphael’s nursery is the main bedroom, a luxurious space with his and hers painted French wardrobes, a vast bed and a plethora of feminine adornments. Grace has created an indulgent corner that’s purely for her. It boasts a mirrored dressing table with vintage scent bottles, pretty corsages, favourite bits of jewellery and family photographs. “Michael does roll his eyes. He had to put a cap on the girly French boudoir-chic thing, or heaven knows where it would have ended,” she laughs.
