Vintage class meets modern design to create a family-friendly home that is relaxed, colourful and fun
Yet what Lucy likes the most about living here, she says, is the abundant natural light, their proximity to nature and the truly clever design. “This house is so user-friendly,” she says. “There is just the right amount of storage, everything is set into the walls and it just works perfectly.” It’s easy to keep tabs on the children: there’s safety glass on the landing, and from the spacious hall you can see straight through the lounge into the garden, or into the kitchen on the other side. The double-height hall looks very contemporary, enhanced by a trio of Stick lights by the modern designer Michael Young. “I think they look like icicles!” Lucy says. She likes to practise what she preaches, and urges customers to mix modern with their vintage, “otherwise your home will look like a museum.” Lucy has always had a love of mid-century furniture, but was trained in fashion and was a fashion journalist for many years. It wasn’t until she and Adam bought the house that she and Petra devised the Showhome concept.
“We both wanted to buy Fifties to Seventies pieces for our homes, and saw there was a gap in the market,” she explains. “We thought we’d buy up vintage furniture, display it here, then sell it.” The venture was an overnight success, and they had to rapidly restock. Now Molly and Bert are older, Lucy no longer sells from home – it is all done on the website – but she and Petra continue to source from dealers all over the world.
