The Designer Behind The Cosatto Trof
Stephen Shaw, designer of the award winning Cosatto Trof, on what makes a great high chair
Why do you think designer baby/children’s products have gained such prominence in recent years?
It seems that the design world has finally woken up to the baby product market. Ultimately this product is for a young customer at an exciting time of their life when they really need great products to help them with the new challenges they face. All in all it's a very exciting sector to be involved in and up until about five years ago it was amazingly old fashioned!
What is it about the Trof’s design that sets it apart from the competition?
The Trof's combination of bent plywood, polished steel and plastic is unique for a highchair. It gives a nod to classic mid-century design and sits beautifully in a modern kitchen. At the same time the bold apple print seat liner gives the product an injection of colour which we are famous for.
What are you most proud of design-wise about the Trof?
We feel we've created a contemporary yet timeless piece that will look as good in 20 years time as it does today. We want people to look at the Trof as an heirloom piece – perfect to hand down through generations.
Trof's 360 rotate feature, it's removable tray and gas lift height adjustment make it perfectly adaptable for modern family life.
Who or what is your design icon?
We love Scandinavian design particularly from 1950's and 60's era.
What influences came into play when designing the Trof?
We looked at Vitra designs, Eames and Ercol furniture for it's great quality and enduring style.
