What is your name and job title?
Leopoldina Haynes, co-owner of Piccoli & Co.
Can you tell us a little about your boutique, and why you think it is award winning?
Piccoli & Co brings a fresh and sophisticated approach to children’s nurseries with upscale bedding, furniture and accessories; everything in the shop has been handpicked or designed by us. Our furniture collection is based on 18th/19th century French and Gustavian antiques, it’s handcrafted in solid wood and hand painted.
We offer monogramming service, from blankets, linen pillow cases, pyjamas, bibs and so much more, can be personalised for as little as £9.00. Monogramming is a key part of our business, where we went back to my Italian heritage. In Italy every family has a set of monogrammed linen in their home. Our vision is bringing and mixing this tradition with a fresh approach and offering this service in welcoming new additions to families.
This is a completely new concept in the UK and we hope award winning!
What distinguishes it from the plethora of independent boutiques?
We feel we are offering something different in both our unique product selection and store design from our competitors.
Our customers say when walking into our store they feel an air of calm! We have worked hard to create this environment. We hope to have made a safe and friendly environment for new and expedient mums to shop in comfort for their new babies.
We do not have the bright coloured toys and accessories that many other children’s stores offer. We feel the baby’s nursery should focus on soft colours to aid relaxation and sleep and our mums appreciate this. Of course children need bright colours but we leave this to our competitors and offer something much calmer and we hope inviting.
Why do you think it is important to support and grown independent boutiques?
Independent boutiques are the heart of every community. They bring knowledgeable service, originality and personal touch to customers. And more importantly make each city unique.
How can you help parents achieve a balance between practicality and beautiful design?
This is at the core of our business, we strive to find the highest quality, most beautiful products that parents and babies will enjoy using time after time.
How do you select and make an edit of the products you sell?
We’ve been searching extensively through Europe, from France, Belgium, Spain, Portugal and Italy, to bring to the England the most unique, handmade and luxury products which are not available yet. We aim to find the best of the best of small luxury brands, and the search never ends! Each season we travel further to find more and better brands for our customers to enjoy and guarantee the unicity of our store. We love creative handmade items, as well as more established high end brands, all in the name of beauty.
Why did you enter your product into the Junior Design Awards?
The Junior Design Awards are so prestigious in the baby industry, and having a good feedback would give us confidence in what we are doing and makes us stronger as company.
What is the parenting product you wish you had designed?
The sleeping bag, for its simplicity, safety and practicality.
