Who in your family sleeps in Bambizi beds?
My daughters Sofia, seven, and Sienna, four.
The name Bambizi sounds chic and Italian. Where does it come from?
My eldest daughter, Sofia, attended a nursery called Bambino’s. I loved the idea of using “Bamb” to signify baby/child and added my own twist of “izi”. And so Bambizi was born.
What’s the key to great design for children?
For me, safety is paramount and when I design a product this is always my focal point. I believe that if an item is designed well then safety is also met. My designs are also ecologically friendly, creative and designed for longevity.
Describe Bambizi’s style in three words…
Classical-modern, magical, elegant.
What’s the secret to a good night’s sleep?
A space created to feel safe, peaceful and calm; an environment that is serene with relaxing colours. Your child can sense your emotions and if you are relaxed at sleep time, because the setting and feel in the nursery is tranquil, then your child will feel relaxed too.
For those times when your daughters just can’t sleep, what do you..?
Sofia and Sienna will read, or we’ll share a book together. And there’s always time for a cuddle.
Which designers do you admire?
Design influences for me come from nature and the feelings created by what is all around us naturally. For the same reason I admire Dutch designer Tord Boontje. I also admire the elegance of Chanel and for alternative design I admire Vivienne Westwood.
All of your furniture is made in Britain. What makes British craftsmanship unique?
British craftsmanship has been around and proven for generations. Techniques used in Tudor times are still surviving hundreds of years later. I love that cabinet makers learn a skill as an apprentice and are also focused on the safety and quality of a design. True British craftsmen are not about cheap mass production but unique, quality pieces.
What’s great about working with individual crafts people?
The knowledge they possess about their materials is invaluable. Forming a close working connection with them has expanded my own knowledge and this is advantageous when working on future designs.
How did you learn your craft?
I studied woodwork and furniture design at college so this was my introduction into the world of joinery. The skilled craftsmen I have met and worked with along the way have extended my knowledge and I’m grateful to them for sharing their expertise.
Some of your designs look a little like four-poster beds. Does that make your daughters feel like princesses?
My daughters are my princesses. To experience a magical, fairytale filled childhood is what we all want for our children and if this can be achieved through their own bedroom designs then perfect!
Are your Sofia and Sienna’s bedrooms tidy?
Only when they are not in them!
What bedding do your daughters have?
Organic, white linen. Clean, crisp and simple.
Why is being eco friendly important for you?
There are so many toxins in our environment that are out of our control. By choosing natural, healthy, organic pieces for our homes, our children will benefit from a healthier home environment.
What do parents get when they choose Bambizi?
When you buy from us, you’re buying more than just a piece of furniture. You can see and feel the difference. Our furniture is designed to set us apart from other furniture manufacturers worldwide. All our furniture is handmade by top-quality craftsmen using traditional British woodworking techniques. We hand-pick the very best hardwoods and veneers, and manufacture everything here in England.
