gNappies Q&A with Louise Roper - Best eco nappy 2014 - WINNER

We meet the managing director behind the 2014 Junior Design Award-winning entry

 1 of 1

What is your name and job title?

Louise Roper, European Managing Director, gNappies

Can you tell us a little about the nappies you have entered into the awards, and why you think it is award winning?

At gNappies we are ‘redefining the disposable’

Nappy changing is a large, but not the most pleasant part, of everyday life for parents. Adding to that disposable nappies are a burden to the planet and put a question mark over healthy living as they contain perfume as well as plastic film like polyethylene and polypropylene.

gNappies’ soft colourful cotton outer, and a breathable inner in our patented high-tech gBreathe™ material with a soft edge trim, allowing airflow without rubbing, our gNappies have been thoughtfully designed to reduce rash, rubbing and discomfort for baby. No plastic film, no tabs, no perfumes, no dyes.
And our biodegradable disposable inserts compost in a home composter faster than vegetable peelings and are absorbent enough to work for real parents with lives too busy for leaks. This gives parents the choice of an easy, guilt-free solution, and focussing on enjoying baby. (Our colourful gPants designs make changing times BRIGHTER too!)

Why do you think it stands out in the eco nappy department?

Our products are a real gear-change for 'eco nappies' - you don't have to sacrifice function, quality or style to have something that is better for the planet.  gNappies are high quality through and through, from vegetable dyes to the soft cotton and high tech gBreathe materials which rivals even the most high-end sportswear materials in breathability and resistance to leaks.  We haven't just improved an existing disposable slightly by using more recyclable materials - we have gone all the way with our compostable biodegradable inserts without any nasties.  That's why we are the only nappy with the Cradle-to-Cradle™ certification, which means the disposable inserts have been tested against the strictest criteria for both human and planetary health, and found to go back to the Earth in a positive way. We're pretty proud of that.

Why should parents invest in eco nappies

Eco nappies are often pitched to just be for the future. But as parents we also live in the now and for gNappies that means both convenience, but also the confidence that we are doing the right thing for our children. That's why we have worked hard on increasing breathability and removed polyethylene, polypropylene, perfumes and other nasties and added a soft rib to replace the common tight elastic around the thighs. So there's less to irritate baby's delicate skin and more to enjoy, every day. As parents we want babies to be comfortable now, and make sure we are doing the best for their future, and that means the future of the planet too.

What are your best selling designs?

Twice a year we bring out limited edition colours and print designs which always sell well. The fastest sellers have probably been our gB gPants - which we made especially for the great year of the Queen’s Jubilee and the London Olympics - that sold out within hours.

Our gorgeous plush velour gRegal which was released to celebrate the birth of Prince George is also up there with the all-time greats.

What does the future have in store for eco nappies?

Well, the immediate future is filled with bright new designs.

And from an environmental perspective; whilst we have made nappies much more eco-friendly, even gNappies are not perfect and so we continue to drive forward

We have some very exciting projects underway both in terms of product innovation and collaborations that  will make using gNappies significantly better for the planet.
